Homemade Apple Crumble
Ingredients
For the Apple Filling:
4 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or your favorite variety), peeled, cored, and sliced
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
¼ cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
For the Crumble Topping:
1 cup all-purpose flour
½ cup rolled oats
½ cup packed brown sugar
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon salt
½ cup unsalted butter, cold and diced
For Serving (Optional):
Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream
Instructions
Prepare the Apples : In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the sliced apples, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), lemon juice, and flour. Cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are slightly softened but still hold their shape. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
Make the Crumble Topping : In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold, diced butter and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to rub the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Assemble the Crumble : Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread the apple mixture evenly in a baking dish (approximately 8×8 inches or similar size). Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples, pressing down lightly to create a cohesive layer.
Bake : Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30–35 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges.
Cool and Serve : Let the crumble cool for 5–10 minutes before serving. For an extra indulgent touch, serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
