Crispy Honey-Glazed Shrimp Recipe
Ingredients:
For the Shrimp:
1 lb (450g) large shrimp, peeled and deveined
½ cup (60g) all-purpose flour
½ cup (60g) cornstarch
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon paprika (optional)
½ cup (120ml) cold water (adjust as needed)
1 egg
Vegetable oil (for frying)
For the Honey Glaze:
⅓ cup (80ml) honey
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon rice vinegar (or apple cider vinegar)
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1 teaspoon cornstarch + 2 tablespoons water (slurry for thickening)
½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for spice)
1 clove garlic, minced
For Garnish:
1 tablespoon sesame seeds
2 green onions, sliced
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Batter
1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, garlic powder, and paprika.
2. Add the egg and cold water gradually, whisking until a smooth batter forms. It should be slightly thick but still pourable.
Step 2: Coat and Fry the Shrimp
1. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep pan or pot over medium-high heat (350°F / 175°C).
2. Dip each shrimp into the batter, ensuring it’s fully coated, and carefully place it into the hot oil.
3. Fry in batches for about 2-3 minutes per side or until golden brown and crispy.
4. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a wire rack or paper towel to drain excess oil.
Step 3: Make the Honey Glaze
1. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine honey, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, and red pepper flakes (if using).
2. In a separate small bowl, mix cornstarch with water to form a slurry.
3. Once the sauce is heated through, stir in the slurry and cook for 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
Step 4: Coat the Shrimp
1. Place the fried shrimp in a large bowl and pour the honey glaze over them. Toss gently to coat evenly.
Step 5: Garnish and Serve
1. Sprinkle sesame seeds and sliced green onions over the shrimp.
2. Serve immediately with steamed rice or as an appetizer.
Tips for Best Results:
For extra crispiness, fry the shrimp twice: fry once for 2 minutes, remove, rest for a minute, then fry again for another minute.
Ensure the oil is at the right temperature; too low will make the shrimp oily, too high will burn the batter.
Serve immediately to maintain crispiness.
