Slow Cooker Baked Ziti

Ingredients

1 lb ziti pasta (or penne)
1 lb Italian sausage (bulk, not in casings) or ground beef
1 small onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 jar (24 oz) marinara sauce (or homemade tomato sauce)
1 can (14.5 oz) crushed tomatoes
1 cup water (or broth)
1 tsp dried basil
1 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
Salt and black pepper, to taste
Chopped fresh basil or parsley (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

Cook the Pasta:
Cook the ziti in a large pot of salted boiling water for about 2-3 minutes less than the package instructions, until just under al dente. Drain and set aside.

Cook the Meat:
In a skillet over medium heat, cook the Italian sausage (or ground beef), onion, and garlic until the meat is browned and the onion is tender. Drain any excess fat.

Prepare the Sauce:
In a large bowl, combine the marinara sauce, crushed tomatoes, water, dried basil, dried oregano, red pepper flakes (if using), and a pinch of salt and black pepper.

Layer the Ingredients:
In the slow cooker, layer half of the cooked ziti, followed by half of the meat mixture, and then half of the sauce mixture. Sprinkle with some Parmesan cheese and a bit of mozzarella cheese. Repeat the layers with the remaining ziti, meat mixture, sauce, and cheeses.

Cook:
Cover and cook on low for 3-4 hours, or on high for 1.5-2 hours, until the pasta is cooked through and the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Garnish and Serve: If desired, garnish with chopped fresh basil or parsley before serving.

For Extra Creaminess: You can mix some ricotta cheese into the layers or add a dollop on top before cooking.
